  • The second Coronavirus-proof Solidarity Barometer, produced by the Fondation des Apprentis d'Auteuil with Ipsos, is published on Tuesday.

  • If the French are a little less numerous to see being more united than before the crisis, the donations, them, do not weaken.

  • While health was the area that donors wanted to help the most in 2020, it is now the most disadvantaged that their priority is.

Despite the ambient gloom, are the French still generous?

This is the question posed by the second Coronavirus-proof Solidarity Barometer *, produced by the Fondation des Apprentis d'Auteuil with Ipsos and published this Tuesday.

The first opus had been made at the end of the first confinement, in the spring of 2020. What about, therefore, a year later?

takes stock.

The desire to be united on the decline, stable donations

In 2021, the desire of the French to be more united because of the crisis is certainly present, but it is weakening: 52% want to be, against 65% in 2020. Fortunately, the donations are still there: close to one in two French people (49%) say they have done at least one during the year 2020, a stable proportion compared to 2019 (- 2 points).

And more than half (54%) intend to do at least one in 2021. “We feared last year that the pandemic and the first confinement would cause a withdrawal into oneself and slow down the generosity of the French.

This did not happen and the stability reflected by the survey […] is encouraging, ”comments Stéphane Dauge, from the Fondation des Apprentis d'Auteuil.

Relatives, but not only

Who is this solidarity aimed at?

Since the start of the crisis, it has been primarily to relatives: 37% of people questioned say they have helped those around them more.

But that's not the only way to reach out, as 29% donated food and clothing in 2020, 21% donated money, and 12% volunteered.

Among the better-off [people whose household income exceeds 120,000 euros per year], 70% made financial donations.

Larger donations

There are not necessarily more donors, but their effort is more substantial.

The total average amount per donor was 395 euros in 2020, or 95 euros better than in 2019. And among the more fortunate, the increase is even more marked: + 323 euros, for an average total of 2,463 euros per donor .

“Nearly one in three French people plan to give more in 2021, welcomes Stéphane Dauge, which is excellent news, considering that they were already one in four in 2020”.

From health to the most disadvantaged

Finally, the Foundation's Barometer shows an evolution in the targeted causes.

In June 2020, the French focused their donations on health and medical research.

But this year, with the vaccination campaign launched, it is the poor who are prioritized (36% of these quotes), ahead of health and medical research (34%) and the defense of animals (25%).

And Stéphane Dauge warns: if "these vaccines represent a hope of sheltering the virus, the French are well aware that they will not protect the most deprived people, as well as children and young people as a whole, the economic and social consequences of the health crisis ”.

* Survey carried out from March 5 to 18, 2021 among 1,000 people constituting a representative sample of the French population.
