• Saturated Nurse The other viruses that we are avoiding thanks to anti-Covid measures

The Influenza Surveillance System in Spain (SVGE), made up of epidemiologists and virologists from the autonomous communities, the National Epidemiology Center (CNE) and the National Microbiology Center (CNM) of the Carlos III Health Institute (ISCIII), has detected, until April 4, only 12 influenza viruses in the 2020-2021 season in all of Spain.

These data contrast with those of the same week of the previous year,

before the COVID-19 pandemic

, when the global flu incidence rate stood at 0.7 cases per 100,000 inhabitants.

Specifically, last year around this time, 2,543 sentinel detections (carried out by the network of doctors in charge of notifying cases) of influenza viruses had been reported.

To these we must add 6,848 non-sentinel.

That is, 9,391 in total.

The World Health Organization (WHO) notes in its weekly report that current influenza surveillance data should be interpreted with caution as the COVID-19 pandemic

"has influenced behaviors to seek medical assistance, staffing / routines at sentinel sites, as well as testing priorities and capacity in Member States. "

"The different hygiene and social distancing measures implemented by the Member States to reduce the transmission of the SARS-CoV-2 virus have probably contributed to reducing the transmission of the influenza virus", justifies the WHO.

The situation in Spain is also transferred to Europe and the rest of the world.

This week, a confirmed flu case admitted to the ICU has been reported to the European Center for Disease Control and Prevention

(ECDC).

Since the beginning of the season, 11 cases of laboratory-confirmed influenza admitted to the ICU have been reported, of which none have died.

The ECDC notes that the flu season in the WHO European Region has usually started already at this time of year.

"Although tests for the detection of the influenza virus are being carried out on a general and continuous basis, the reported influenza activity still remains at a very low level," they say.

The SVGE report this Thursday highlights that, worldwide,

"despite the continuity in testing for influenza

, even with increased frequency in some countries, influenza activity remained at lower levels than expected for this time of the year".

In fact, according to data from FluNet, from March 1 to 14, 2021, 375 influenza virus detections were recorded among the 291,427 samples analyzed.
