The Weeknd pledged to donate $ 1 million to help conflict-affected Ethiopians in the Tigray region.

A gesture which is not surprising when we know that the artist, Abel Tesfaye of his real name, was born in Canada of Ethiopian parents.

“My heart is bleeding for mine in Ethiopia.

Innocent civilians, ranging from small children to the elderly, are senselessly killed and displaced as they face fear and destruction, ”The Weeknd wrote in a statement posted on Instagram.

His donation will help provide two million meals through the United Nations World Food Program.

A situation out of control

Clashes began in Tigray last November when Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed decided to call on the army to dislodge the Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF), which challenges its authority.

Since then, the situation has been described as "uncontrollable" on the military and humanitarian level by Pekka Haavisto, Finnish Foreign Minister mandated by the EU to report on the situation at the beginning of the year.

Last month, US Foreign Minister Antony Blinken reported "acts of ethnic cleansing" carried out by national forces.

A large-scale military and humanitarian crisis, therefore, which is already turning into a migratory crisis as the region's population seeks to flee the fighting, in particular by heading for Europe.
