US rapper DMX died at the age of 50, according to his family.

He had been treated for a heart attack in a hospital in New York State in the past few days.

DMX celebrated a meteoric entry into the US rap scene in 1998 with its debut album "It's Dark and Hell is Hot".

It achieved multiple platinum status and contained several hits such as "Ruff Ryders' Anthem", "Get At Me Dog" and "Stop Being Greedy".

DMX released seven albums and received three Grammy nominations.

As an actor he has appeared in several films: 1998 in "Belly", 2000 in "Romeo Must Die" with Jet Li and the singer Aaliyah, with whom he also sang the soundtrack song "Come Back in One Piece".

He played with Li in "Cradle 2 the Grave" ("Born 2 Die") and with Steven Seagal in "Exit Wounds".
