A former worker at the
Vivotecnia
laboratory
recorded the images between 2018 and 2020, which today serve the animal rights organization Cruelty Free International to request the closure of the company, which has received EU funds, for "free cruelty and abuse".
Vivotecnia, a Madrid-based contract research laboratory, experiments with a variety of animals, including monkeys, dogs, small pigs, rats, mice and rabbits for the biopharmaceutical, chemical, cosmetic, tobacco and food industries, reports
The Guardian
.
In the images taken by the former worker, technicians shake and beat rats to stun them, beheadings of mice with scissors, rabbits trapped in restraint devices, with injuries and bruises and dogs forced into boxes and cages.
The more graphic images show a technician drawing blood from the eyes of a fully conscious rat, and a staff member drawing a face on the genitals of a male monkey anchored to a table while another technician draws blood.
In a statement sent to the British newspaper, the executive director of Vivotecnia,
Andrés König
, has categorically denied the accusations.
"We work at all times to guarantee the quality of our work, always taking animal welfare into account," he stated.
The anonymous whistleblower claims that he reported his concern to his superiors, but no action was taken.
