A wrong-way driver with a badly decayed body in the passenger seat has been arrested in Spain.

A long chase with several police vehicles came to an end on Thursday when the 66-year-old had an accident on the AP-7 motorway not far from the Catalan community of Jafre and came to a halt, the police said.

Nobody was seriously injured in the accident around 40 kilometers south of the French border.

The man drove more than 30 kilometers in the wrong direction in France and Spain.

Investigations have been started, it said.

The wrong-way driver should be brought before the judge on Friday.

As the newspaper "El País" reported, citing the authorities, the wrong-way driver was identified as a Spanish citizen who had lived in Switzerland for a long time.

According to the findings, the corpse was the Swiss partner of the man who died about three weeks ago at the age of 88 under previously unexplained circumstances.

The body should be subjected to an autopsy, it said.

According to "El País", the unusual incident began early on Thursday afternoon at the border when the man suddenly turned his car around during a check in Le Boulou and drove away in the wrong direction.

The French police immediately informed the Spanish authorities.

It is believed that the man wanted to drive with the body to the Swiss homeland of his deceased partner.

Because of the corona pandemic, there are currently controls at the border between Spain and France where, among other things, the prescribed negative PCR tests must be presented.
