Kazuho Hieda, a Japanese-style painter who painted fantastic and poetic works and was selected as a Person of Cultural Merit, died at a hospital in Tokyo on the 23rd of last month due to senility.

I was 100 years old.

Kazuho Hieda was born in Wakayama Prefecture in 1918, became familiar with painting from an early age due to the influence of his father who was a designer, and went on to Tokyo Fine Arts School and now Tokyo University of the Arts to start creating Japanese paintings.

Shortly after the war, he participated in "Creative Art", which was formed with the aim of creating new Japanese paintings, and attracted attention by releasing fantastic and poetic works one after another.

In the 40's of the Showa era, he worked on a project to reproduce the Kondo mural painting of Horyuji Temple, which was burnt by fire, and also worked as a professor at Tokyo University of the Arts for many years to foster younger generations.

He received the Japan Art Academy Prize and Gift Award in 1991, and was selected as a Person of Cultural Merit in 2001.

According to his relatives, Mr. Hieda had not been making pictures for about four years due to weakened physical strength, so in February he broke his waist and was hospitalized and treated at a hospital in Tokyo. However, he died on the 23rd of last month due to senility.
