Ten thousand statues on a 50-meter scroll

"Re-engraving" Dazu Rock Carvings on Paper

It takes more than 10 minutes to see the end from the beginning to the 50-meter-long picture scroll. If you look at it in more detail, you can still appreciate it in half an hour. This is the creator Chen Pengcheng's more than 5 years. Created works.

Thousand-handed Guanyin, reclining Buddha... tens of thousands of statues, sitting or standing, or lying or laughing, are lifelike, full-bodied and vivid.

As the picture scroll slowly unfolds, the audience appreciates the grotto art as if they were on the scene.

"The Dazu Rock Carvings are represented by the "Five Mountains" of Baoding Mountain, Beishan, Nanshan, Shimen Mountain, and Shizhu Mountain. It is a world cultural heritage. This 50-meter-long scroll of mine is based on the Baodingshan Grottoes as a blueprint. All the statues in Big Buddha Bay are all painted in." In an interview with reporters yesterday, Chen Pengcheng said that he wanted to let more people understand this world-class cultural heritage through his creations and express his confidence and pride in Chinese traditional culture. .

Earn a huge amount of money by drawing at the age of 11

Chen Pengcheng is 55 years old and lives in Longshui, Dazu.

With long hair, he looks like an artist.

"I don't dare to say that I am an artist, half of which is self-study, and half of which is from apprenticeship." He told reporters that he was born in a rural area.

When I was very young, I liked painting.

In the past, the conditions were not good and there was no painting tools, so he used tiles or pot bottom ash to paint.

When he was 8 years old, he painted a portrait of his father. Because of his lifelike expression, he became famous in the village in one fell swoop.

When he was 11 years old, someone came to him to paint.

"I remember painting a Bodhisattva. Each painting was more than 1 meter long. During a winter vacation, I painted a total of 24 pictures." Chen Pengcheng said that the painting caused him to suffer from frostbite, and until now, it will recur every winter. .

However, I also made my first huge sum of money in my life. "A total of 185 yuan in labor remuneration is equivalent to the price of parents selling two big fat pigs."

The first time he earned a lot of money from painting, it also strengthened his determination to continue painting.

As he grew older, Chen Pengcheng felt that although he had hobbies and talents, he still had many shortcomings in theory and technique, so he began to apprenticeship and learn art.

Chen Pengcheng told reporters that over the years, he has worshipped three teachers back and forth.

The teachers have given him a lot of help. The Chinese painting, oil painting, paper-cutting, and aesthetics of painting that he now knows all come from the teachers.

Among them, there is a teacher Yuan Hui who graduated from the National Hangzhou College of Art (the predecessor of the China Academy of Art).

"I remember that when I was 19 years old, I happened to have a family and life was very difficult. In order to learn painting, I specially invited him to live in my house for a month. During the day, we went to work and do things separately. At night, I would He asked for advice and study." Chen Pengcheng is still very interested when he talks about his past learning process. "At that time, I ate at 6 o'clock every night and had to eat till late at night. For a few hours, Mr. Yuan Hui kept talking and teaching. The theories and techniques of Chinese painting are also the enlightenment of Chinese painting."

Works are collected by many museums

When he was young, Chen Pengcheng did many things to support his family.

But he said that even under very difficult conditions, he has never given up painting.

Sometimes, even the money earned is used to supplement the paintings.

In Dazu where Chen Pengcheng is located, there is the world-renowned Dazu Rock Carvings. He grew up listening to the folk proverb of "Going up to Emei, down to Baoding".

When I was young, I would only look at the exquisite grotto statues. When I grew up, I really understood the meaning of this sentence.

He respects the dense grotto sculptures in Baoding Mountain, so he has always wanted to use his creation to let more people understand the exquisite and shocking grotto art.

Before that, he had created the 10-meter-long "Ten-meter Picture Scroll of Dazu Rock Carvings", which has been collected by Dazu Rock Carving Art Museum.

In order to have a deeper understanding of the grotto sculptures in Baoding Mountain, he went to sketch many times before creating.

In order to see another visual grotto, he went to the opposite mountain, where the rainy road was slippery, pulling the mulberry tree branch, he fell from a height, and almost met his life.

"Without a bit of cold, the plum blossoms are so fragrant, these are vignettes on the road of creation." Speaking of these, he was calm and breezy.

Another work "Pictures of the Three Gorges of the Yangtze River" was collected by the Chongqing Museum (Chongqing China Three Gorges Museum).

At the beginning of 2016, he decided to challenge himself again, using Baodingshan Big Buddha Bay as a blueprint to create a 50-meter long scroll.

"The "Painting Scroll of Baoding Mountain in Dazu Rock Carvings" created before is an exterior view of the Big Buddha Bay in Baoding Mountain. This time, I want to present these grotto statues in more detail." Chen Pengcheng further explained that with age, My painting skills are becoming more and more mature, and his experience is becoming more and more abundant.

The children also grow up, so they don't need to worry about them, and they have more energy and time to create.

In order to raise paintings by painting, he usually takes on some hand-painting and painting business and earns a certain amount of remuneration.

In addition to family expenses, the rest of the money is used to create scrolls.

Thousands of statues are all included in the picture scroll

Earlier, the 50-meter long scroll had entered the final stage, but Chen Pengcheng was still very busy.

For this reason, he gets up at 6 o'clock every morning, and then goes to the studio of Dazu Art Museum to create.

Go home at nine or ten o'clock in the evening, and spend more than 15 hours on the scroll every day.

"People have lost a lot of weight. They were already thin, but now they are estimated to be only more than 90 kilograms." His wife Li Zhongying said distressedly.

This is the case for the finishing stage. It is conceivable that it is not easy in the early stage and in the middle of the creation.

He introduced that the picture scroll is based on the most famous Baodingshan Grottoes in Dazu Rock Carvings. There are three parts, all reproduced through storytelling.

The first part is the monkhood of Xingxiao, telling the story of Zhao Zhifeng, the creator of Dazu Baoding stone carvings, who practiced as a monk for his sick parents at the age of 5; the second part is about the practice of Mimo, and it is about Zhao Zhifeng's research and practice of the Liubenzhen Buddha; Baoding becoming a Buddha is also the core part. It is about Zhao Zhifeng building a grotto after returning to his hometown of Dazu, and finally presenting the full picture of the grotto.

At present, the three-part creation has been completed.

The reporter saw from the picture scroll that the part of Baoding Buddhahood includes the magnificent Thousand-Hand Guanyin and the serene and lying reclining Buddha... Countless statues, ranging from looks and manners to small garments, accessories, etc. They are all extremely realistic.

"50 meters long, to show tens of thousands of statues, you have to consider the issue of proportions, and make no mistakes as much as possible. Once you make a mistake, it won't be easy to reproduce. I always draw a small draft first, and then finalize the creation after I feel satisfied. Chen Pengcheng said that Thousand-Hand Guanyin is one of the important works of Baodingshan Grottoes. On the 88-square-meter rock wall, the Guanyin Bodhisattva located in the middle stretches out thousands of hands and thousands of eyes, which is very magnificent and magnificent.

In order to reproduce the "Thousand Hands and Thousand Eyes" when I was creating, I once painted dizzy.

In addition, how to express the two caves of Yuanjue Cave and Vairocana Dojo in Big Buddha Bay also made him think for a long time.

"It took 19 days to think, and I couldn't fall asleep thinking about it every night." Chen Pengcheng said, if you step by step and simply reproduce, only the appearance of the door can appear in the picture, and the exquisite stone carvings inside the cave will not be able to show it.

How to do?

Finally, he broke the frame and boldly opened the "door" to reveal the stone carvings in the cave in all directions.

"Solo exhibition will be held for him, and experts will be invited to evaluate"

Ouyang Yangguang, a staff member of the Dazu District Art Museum, has been engaged in traditional Chinese painting for many years.

He told reporters that, first of all, he admired Chen Pengcheng very much, "Every time I saw Teacher Chen, he was painting, sometimes even at night. He put his creative ideas into action and persisted for so many years, which is very satisfying. Respect.” Secondly, from the perspective of volume, the 50-meter-long scroll is enlarged a lot compared to the size of the usual paintings, and the difficulty of painting is particularly high.

Third, in terms of the subject matter, although some creators used Dazu Rock Carvings as the subject, Chen Pengcheng used Zhao Zhifeng’s life as a narrative clue to reproduce the whole picture of Baodingshan Grottoes in a realistic way. Not only did he have his own creative ideas and ideas, but also artistic expressions. It is also more complete in strength.

"Finally, from the perspective of perception, the long scroll has a very high degree of completion. The long scroll involves many statues and landscapes. It is not easy to operate and can easily appear messy. However, this work by Chen Pengcheng is coherent and very integrated. The ink is precise and has the charm and artistic expression of Chinese painting."

According to Wang Jianping, director of Dazu Art Museum, Dazu Art Museum has established an expert studio to support artists in their creations. Chen Pengcheng is one of the specially invited experts.

In order to make Chen Pengcheng feel at ease to paint, they not only provided him with studios, tools, etc., but also gave him a certain amount of creative funding every year.

Chen Pengcheng works hard and his spirit is worth learning from all creators.

The scale of the picture scroll is also quite shocking. In order to keep improving, they also invited many experts to make suggestions and improve the picture scroll.

Wang Jianping also stated that in order to support and encourage creation, it is expected that the Dazu District Art Museum will hold a solo exhibition of Chen Pengcheng in May.

In addition to the long scrolls, other works by Chen Pengcheng will be exhibited.

At that time, experts will also be invited to conduct further communication and evaluation on the long scroll.
