"After a serious and prolonged illness on April 7, an outstanding scientist with a world renown in the field of molecular biology and virology, Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences Iosif Grigorievich Atabekov, the founder of molecular biology of plant viruses as a scientific direction in our country, passed away," the message says.

It is noted that for 46 years he headed the Department of Virology, Faculty of Biology, Lomonosov Moscow State University and created a unique scientific unit that has no analogues in the world. 

“For more than half a century, Atabekov also headed the Department of Biochemistry of Plant Viruses at the Institute of Physicochemical Biology.
