The updated document of the

Vaccination Strategy against Covid-19 in Spain

, published by the Ministry of Health on March 30, points out the priority of

vaccinating cancer patients

, including them in the

"very high risk" group.

Not all patients found to have cancer will advance the SARS-CoV-2 vaccination queue.

Health establishes that there will be 170,000 people diagnosed with the disease.

That is, those who suffer

"solid organ cancer under treatment with cytotoxic chemotherapy

, metastatic solid organ cancer and patients who receive radiotherapy for tumors of thoracic location with risk of pneumonitis (esophageal tumor, adiotherapy on lung metastases, etc.)".

Carolina Darias's ministry also includes as risk

patients those oncohematological patients in the last five years

, with uncontrolled disease and / or ECOC 3-4 and / or severe neutropenia, regardless of the time since diagnosis ".

"Greater exposure"

"The vaccination plan in Spain includes cancer patients

within the group of people with risk conditions

: risk of serious morbidity and mortality, and risk of contagion

due to increased exposure

, due to the disease, treatments and frequent visits to healthcare settings ", explains the Spanish Society of Medical Oncology on its website.

"Cancer patients are at

increased risk of severe disease and mortality with Covid-19 infection

," adds the SEOM in a document.

Those at highest risk are: "Those who are receiving active treatment or those with advanced cancer and especially patients with lung cancer and hematological malignancies

. These are those at the highest risk of serious disease and mortality

."

And they coincide with the criteria of the Ministry of Health in pointing out "patients with solid tumors" as those most at risk.

"Particularly in the first year after diagnosis

.

"

The risk, says the entity, "decreases after five years of cancer diagnosis."
