The chairman of the World Medical Association, Frank Ulrich Montgomery, has spoken out clearly in favor of tough interventions to combat the corona pandemic.

"If we weren't going to lockdown, this infection would now roll unchecked across the whole country," he told RTL and ntv on Tuesday.

"A whole series of people would die in addition to everyone else, up to 200,000 are the prognoses."

Montgomery also called for preparation for the time after a hard lockdown.

"Anyone who goes into lockdown must also have a concept of how to get out of lockdown again," he said.

Even a year after the pandemic, everything is being driven far too much on sight.

"I think that one or the other Mr. politician has to think a little more."

North Rhine-Westphalia Prime Minister Armin Laschet (CDU) announced at the beginning of April that he would be thinking about measures against the third corona wave over the Easter days.

Then on Monday he proposed a temporary hard lockdown.
