The announcement was made by one of the city councilors on social media.

Thursday evening, the city of Quimper became one of the first cities to become a "freedom zone" for LGBT people.

Elected from the opposition in Quimper (Finistère), Karim Ghachem submitted a wish during the last municipal council of the prefecture of Finistère in order to commit his city as a “zone of freedom” for LGBTQIA + people.

According to the elected representative of La République en Marche, Quimper would be the first European city to decide in this direction.

In March, another Breton stood out on the same subject.

Member of the European Parliament for Finistère, Pierre Karleskind had asked the Parliament to declare the European Union a “zone of freedom” for LGBT people.

A wish formulated in response to “zones without LGBT ideology” established in several cities in Poland.

An openly homophobic ideology born in the mind of a Polish newspaper, which distributed stickers to its readers in 2019. A movement followed and taken up by several cities and communities in the country.

"It is important to affirm and reaffirm that in our territories, each and everyone is free to live their life, that Quimper is a space of freedom and development for all", recalls Karim Ghachem in his vow, to which was partner Annaïg Le Meur, Member of Parliament and opposition councilor.

The city council of Quimper unanimously voted in favor of this wish, which aims to avoid discrimination but also to denounce it.

The elected official at the origin of this text now hopes to convince other communities to adopt this same commitment.
