Ten years after the start of the war in Syria, Bashar al-Assad's regime still stands.

He can count on his Russian and Iranian allies.

Iran, a Shiite, engaged very early in the conflict alongside the Assad clan, also from a branch of Shiism.

Tehran is sending fighters to fight against rebels and jihadists in Syria.

And they don't always come back.
