Ava DuVernay broke the bad news on April 1, but it apparently wasn't a fish, as no denial was given.

The film

New Gods

, based on the universe of DC comics created by Jack Kirby (creator, among others, of Thor, Hulk, or Captain America in the competition of Marvel), has indeed been canceled.

The director, who was collaborating with author Tom King (winner of the Eisner Award for best comic book writer in 2018) on this highly anticipated project, confirmed on Twitter that Warner had decided to throw in the towel, as reported by the

Hollywood Reporter

.

“Tom, I loved writing

NEW GODS

with you.

I am upset that the saga of Barda, Scott, Granny, Highfather and The Furies ends this way.

Diving into Kirby's Fourth World has been the adventure of a lifetime.

We can't take it off.

Thank you for your friendship, ”she wrote, obviously moved.

Same fate for

The Trench

, the

Aquaman

spin-off

which was to be produced by the director of the blockbuster, James Wan.

Not for now

Warner seems to have decided to follow Marvel's path for his next DCU films, that is, to develop an interconnected universe of films and series that will feed each other.

And obviously, DC officials have decided to focus on big licenses rather than developing spin-offs or new franchises whose success is not at all guaranteed.

“As part of our DC projects, some titles in development, including

New Gods

and

The Trench

, will not be developed.

We thank our partners Ava DuVernay, Tom King, James Wan and Peter Safran for their time and collaboration during this process and look forward to continuing our partnership with them on other DC stories.

The projects will remain in their expert hands if they were to be resumed in the future ”, one can read in a press release, suggesting a more positive outcome in the future.

The "other DC stories" in question obviously relate to

Aquaman 2

, which will be directed as the first opus by James Wan, while Ava DuVernay continues the development of the

Naomi

series

for the CW channel.

On the program in the coming years at DC, the Warner is still developing

The Flash

, scheduled for November 2022,

Black Adam

(July 2022),

Shazam 2

(June 2023) as well as

Wonder Woman 3

.
