A big fire broke out on a building site this Friday afternoon in Vaulx-en-Velin in the Lyon suburbs without causing any casualties, according to the prefecture.

Firefighters came in large numbers to the scene.

Videos circulating on social networks showed a thick plume of black smoke several tens of meters high.

The fire would have broken out after the explosion of a gas cylinder, according to a source close to the authorities.

A local resident reached by phone told AFP that she heard a loud explosion.
