The World Health Organization (WHO) has warned of an increase in corona infections in the Arab region during the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan.
"The situation is not getting better and many countries are moving in a worrying direction," said Ahmed al-Mandhari, WHO Regional Director for the Eastern Mediterranean.
Ramadan as well as Easter would bring the risk of a further increase in infections.
"We understand that these are important occasions that should be celebrated, but please protect yourself and others."
The beginning of Ramadan depends on the appearance of the new crescent moon, as the Islamic calendar is based on the moon.
This year it will probably start around April 13th.
In Ramadan, devout Muslims refrain from eating, drinking, smoking and sex from dawn to sunset.
In the evening they come together to break the fast (iftar).
The risk of corona spread is particularly high at meetings in large groups and at prayers, which are usually very popular in mosques.

Egypt has already announced that it will ban the usual Ramadan boards, as it did last year, because of the pandemic.
Poor people can usually eat free of charge at these tables during Ramadan.
The emirate of Dubai also wants to ban the tablets this year.
