  • Coronavirus: Covid vaccination schedule: groups and vaccines

The World Health Organization (

WHO

) has criticized this Thursday the "unacceptable" slowness in

vaccination in Europe

, at a time when the

covid-19

pandemic

is also

worsening

in Latin America, especially in Brazil, which registered in March its deadliest month.

"Currently the regional situation is the most worrying for several months," said the director of the WHO Europe division,

Hans Kluge

,

urging to accelerate vaccination campaigns

in this continent.

"We must speed up the process by beefing up production, reducing obstacles to [its] administration (...) and

using all the doses" stored

, Kluge added.

Europe is home to 12% of the world's population and has so far administered more than 152 million doses of anticovid vaccine, that is,

a quarter of those injected in the world

.

In Europe, 10% of the population received one dose of the vaccine and 4% received both, according to the organization.

Europe tightens restrictions

In this serious context, many European countries are intensifying their measures to try to stop the spread of the virus, especially by limiting travel.

Germany will

strengthen during the next "8 to 14 days"

controls at its land borders

, while

Italy

decided to extend its measures until April 30.

In

Austria

, the Vienna region will be confined at Easter.

In

France

, where the health situation has been deteriorating for several weeks and already close to 100,000 deaths, schools will be closed for at least three weeks and restrictions will be extended to the entire territory.

The consumption of alcohol in the street will be prohibited in the coming weeks and access to places conducive to outdoor meetings may also be limited, French Prime Minister Jean Castex announced this Thursday.

Europe has the highest death toll

Of the 2.8 million deaths registered in the world since December 2019,

Europe has the highest number with about 958,000 deaths

, followed by Latin America and the Caribbean (about 783,500) and the United States and Canada (575,000), according to a balance from AFP on Thursday.

In the Europe area - which includes 50 countries, including Russia and several Central Asian states - deaths were more than 24,000 last week and are "rapidly" approaching a million in total, according to the organization.
