  • Covid-19 AstraZeneca Vaccine: Why It Has Been Suspended and What Will Happen From Now

The Public Health Commission has given the green light to a new update, the fifth, of the vaccination strategy against Covid in Spain, which will foreseeably be approved this Wednesday at the meeting of the Interterritorial Council.

The update includes the upcoming availability of the

Janssen vaccine

and certifies the extension of the age range for the administration of the

AstraZeneca vaccine

to people up to 65 years, although this range may be extended again soon.

What are the groups that receive the AstraZeneca vaccine?

These are the groups in which they are vaccinated again normally.

Within

Group 3

, grouped under the heading: Other health and social health personnel, the following are specified:

  • Group 3A.

Previously defined in Update 2 of the strategy.

It includes the following active professionals:

  • Hospital staff, primary care, not considered first line -group 2

-, depending on the risk of exposure from work activity and the possibility of adopting adequate protection measures.

  • In other areas,

    dental, dental hygiene

and other health personnel who regularly attend to patients without a mask and for a period of more than 15 minutes will

    be vaccinated

    .

Group 3B.

Active personnel

of the groups listed below, depending on the

risk of exposure from the work activity

and the possibility of adopting the appropriate protection measures:

  • Personnel of the

public health services involved in the management and response to the pandemic

who have not been vaccinated in group 2.

  • Health and social health

    personnel

    not previously vaccinated

, including health inspection services, legal and forensic medicine, private medical consultations, home help services, centers for minors and day centers or equivalent, as well as health and social health students who carry out clinical practices.

  • Health personnel from the following groups:

physiotherapists and occupational therapists, pharmacy office personnel, dental technicians, speech therapists and clinical psychology personnel

    .

The rest of the health personnel will be vaccinated later.

  • Correctional Institution

    Workers

    (IIPP).

Teachers and staff of early childhood education and special educational needs

, including both teachers and other professionals who serve students.

  • Group 6C.

    Teachers and staff of

    primary and secondary education

    .

Who joins this list of AstraZeneca vaccine candidates?

People between 55 and 65 years

of age

are incorporated into vaccination with the AstraZeneca product

, as the health authorities have decided to broaden the age range in which this product has been shown to be safe and effective.

As specified by the Public Health Commission - although no specific details have yet been given - this vaccine will complete the vaccination of the population groups prioritized by their essential activity, such as health and social health personnel who are not first line and workers of health institutions and active groups with an essential function in society such as those of the State Security Forces and Bodies or teachers for example (groups 3 B and C and 6)

Who are the groups that receive the Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna Covid vaccines?

These anticovid options have similar characteristics and will be reserved to vaccinate the following prioritized groups:

  • GROUP 1. Residents and health and social health personnel

who work in homes for the elderly and care for large dependents

  • GROUP 2. Front-line personnel in the health and social-health field

  • GROUP 3. Other health and social health personnel

  • GROUP 3A.

Professionals from the hospital and primary care settings not considered in group 2 and dental

, dental hygiene and other health personnel who care for patients without a mask and for a time greater than 15 minutes

  • GROUP 4. People considered highly dependent

(degree III of dependency, that is, in need of intense support measures) who are not currently institutionalized

  • GROUP 5. People aged 80 and over

(born in 1941 and in previous years).

  • GROUP 5B.

People between 70 to 79 years old

    .

  • GROUP 5C.

People between 60 and 69 years old

    .

  • GROUP 7. People under 60 with high risk conditions for severe COVID-19

    , in vulnerable conditions:

  • People with hematopoietic stem cell transplant, solid organ transplant and waiting list for this one.

  • People on hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis.

  • Oncohematological disease, solid organ cancer treated with cytotoxic chemotherapy, lung cancer treated with chemotherapy or immunotherapy.

  • People with Down Syndrome over 40 years of age.

What about people who have already passed the infection and have antibodies to SARS-CoV-2?

Those

under 65

who would have

passed the Covid-19 six months ago will only receive one dose

.

The

vaccination of those without a history of Covid-19

should be

prioritized

, it is recommended for the moment to act in this way in those belonging to these groups: first-line health personnel (group 2), other health and social-health personnel (group 3) and groups with essential function for society (group 6).

  • Postpone vaccination until 6 months

after diagnosis of infection in personnel up to 65 years of age without risk conditions, with a history of asymptomatic or symptomatic infection, and regardless of severity.

  • In people over 65 or with risk factors, the same action will be taken as in those without a history of COVID-19.

What will happen to the Janssen vaccine?

Janssen's vaccine, already approved, is scheduled to be available in mid-April.

When the vials arrive, "it can be used in parallel with mRNA vaccines to increase the rate of vaccination of older age groups," says Health.

How will high-risk people be vaccinated?

The new update includes a section with news about vaccination in people with very high-risk conditions.

Thus, it establishes that people with

hematopoietic stem cell transplantation, solid organ transplant and a waiting list for this, people on hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis, oncohematological disease, solid organ cancer being treated with cytotoxic chemotherapy, lung cancer being treated with chemotherapy or immunotherapy, HIV infection, immunosuppressed, people with primary immunodeficiency and people with Down syndrome over 40 years of age

should be vaccinated as a priority and not based on their age.

Specifically, the document establishes that these people who will be vaccinated simultaneously to the group of those with ages between 70 and 79 years of age.

MRNA vaccines will be used, in order to achieve the greatest protection in a shorter period of time, says Health.
