SPD health expert Karl Lauterbach assumes that the decision to suspend AstraZeneca vaccinations for under 60-year-olds will have little effect on the vaccination campaign in Germany.

"We will have a small dent from a few days where there is confusion, but then the vaccination rate will pick up again," said Lauterbach on Tuesday evening in the ARD "Tagesthemen".

"I don't expect us to stay on the vaccine."

In general, in people over 60, the benefits outweigh the possible risks.

"It is a very good vaccine that I can recommend," said Lauterbach.

The decision of the federal government was correct.

You have to react to the new data, because "that's not a small thing we're talking about here." It makes sense that the Biontech vaccine is now being used more with younger people, said the SPD politician.

"It just depends on using the right vaccine in the right group."

On Tuesday, the federal and state governments followed the recommendation of the Standing Vaccination Commission (Stiko) that the AstraZeneca preparation should only be used for people aged 60 and over.

The background is cases of blood clots (thromboses) in cerebral veins.

AstraZeneca vaccinations only started again in mid-March after a vaccination break of a few days and new checks.
