A couple of weeks ago a French politician created a low-key commotion by declaring something like reading was a value and that it "made us better", at least more than sitting on the couch watching current television programming.
Although apparently the controversial charge of the phrase was just a little less than arguing about the gravitational constant, it caused a negative reaction, among the people of letters and between people related to the business of letters, which is well known.
