  • Each year, five million meal trays are prepared by the Newrest company before being loaded by planes departing from Paris.

  • After a test at Toulouse-Blagnac airport, Newrest and the Alchimistes will develop the collection of this bio-waste on several airport platforms in order to transform them into compost.

  • In Blagnac, this represented one ton of biowaste per month recovered, which will end up in compost resold and spread in the gardens and fields of the Toulouse conurbation.

Each year, five million meal trays are prepared for boarding on flights departing from Paris airports, not counting those from provincial airports.

And it is as many peelings of vegetables and fruits necessary for their preparation which go in the trash.

But in recent weeks, this bio-waste has been entitled to a second life.

The French collective catering group Newrest, chaired by Toulouse-based Olivier Sadran, has just signed a partnership with Les Alchimistes, which collects food waste and transforms it into compost.

“We started the experiment with Newrest last September.

As they also do collective catering, we started by collecting those from the Sainte-Marie-de-Nevers high school with whom they have a contract.

Then, for three months, we have been in the test phase for the meal trays at Toulouse-Blagnac airport, ”explains Mathieu Thérial, president and co-founder of Alchimistes Occiterra, based in Toulouse.

Since then, a ton of bio-waste has been collected each month and transformed into compost on one of their land in the Pink City or in their electro-composter, capable of swallowing 200 kg of bio-waste per day and making quality compost. in twelve days.

After the trial transformed in Blagnac, the Newrest sites in the Ile-de-France airports or even that of Marseille-Provence have started.

“Newrest wants to increase the volume of bio-waste recovered on its sites by 10% per year, every year over the next 5 years.

The partnership with the Alchemists goes in this direction ”, indicates for his part Olivier Sadran, whose company also provides meals on the trains, is present in many canteens and in 57 countries around the world.

Compost spread and resold

A new deposit of bio-waste for the Alchemists who have had to deal with the closure of restaurants in recent months, from whom they had first launched their collection.

Now, they are also turning to supermarkets and individuals.

Their “standardized” compost is then sold.

“It is used by market gardeners, urban farmers, sold in Biocoop, florists, stores.

Given our production, we hope that it will soon be used by the agricultural world more widely, ”continues Mathieu Therial.

And so the production of the earth would return to the earth, after, sometimes, a little passage in the air.
