A 50-year-old fired a shot with his pistol on a regional train in Hesse on Saturday evening, triggering a major police operation.

After the shot in the train from Frankfurt to Limburg, the police were alerted by the escort, a police spokesman reported.

The train was stopped at Niedernhausen station (Rheingau-Taunus district) and evacuated and cordoned off along with the station area.

Members of the federal and state police and special units of the Hessian police were able to arrest the man on the train. His weapon, which was believed to be a blank gun, was seized. During the arrest, the 50-year-old was slightly injured by a police dog and was taken to hospital for treatment. One passenger complained of earache after the gunshot and was also treated by a doctor. The train traffic was paralyzed for several hours because of the operation.
