Nearly 70% of the respondents have two or more idle mobile phones

74.4% of respondents expect to establish a safe and reliable recycling platform

With the acceleration of mobile phone update iterations, many young people have multiple idle mobile phones in their hands.

According to the White Paper 2019 of China's Waste Electrical and Electronic Products Recycling and Comprehensive Utilization Industry issued by the China Household Electrical Appliances Research Institute and others in 2020, the theoretical scrap volume of mobile phones in my country in 2019 is about 289 million units, and the weight is about 57,800 tons.

For idle mobile phones, would you choose to recycle?

Recently, the Social Survey Center of China Youth Daily conducted a survey of 2011 respondents through the questionnaire network (wenjuan.com) and found that 69.3% of the respondents had two or more idle mobile phones.

59.4% of the respondents said that they would keep their idle mobile phones as backup devices, and 44.9% would give them to their parents and elders.

With regard to mobile phone recycling, 78.5% of the respondents were worried that personal privacy would be leaked.

74.4% of the respondents hope to establish a safe and reliable mobile phone recycling platform to protect their personal rights.

Nearly 70% of the respondents have two or more idle mobile phones

Li Wei (pseudonym), a young man born in the 1980s who lives in Bengbu, Anhui, said that due to work, he would keep a mobile phone as a spare, and the other mobile phones would be reserved for his parents to use.

"I don’t change my mobile phone very frequently. I basically change one in a year and a half. Now the quality of mobile phones is quite good, and the service life is very long. Some mobile phones with relatively good functions will be left to their parents. Now some mobile phones are still available. It supports remote assistance. When the parents can't operate, I can help them remotely, which is more convenient."

Zhou Fei (a pseudonym) born after 95 had two idle mobile phones. One was given to his family and the other was relatively new. The income of the pen is not small, "the value is about the same as I expected, and it is useless to keep it in my hand anyway, it is better to pay out".

According to the survey, 59.4% of the respondents said that they would keep their idle mobile phones as backup devices, and 44.9% would give them to their parents and elders for use. 28.7% of them were sold on second-hand websites/recycling websites and left them alone. Accounted for 25.8%.

78.5% of respondents worry that mobile phone recycling will leak personal privacy

The survey shows that more than half of the investigators are cautious about mobile phone recycling. The main reason is that mobile phone recycling will cause data leakage and expose privacy, accounting for 78.5%.

"Now that the technology is too advanced, even if it is to restore the factory settings, it is difficult to guarantee that personal information will not be leaked." Zhang Cheng (pseudonym) born in the 90s said that he would rather not use your mobile phone than send it for recycling. I am always worried that others will retrieve my data and use it for others."

Zhou Fei, who has experienced mobile phone recycling, introduced that mobile phone recycling needs to fill in the relevant information of the mobile phone on the website, such as model, purchase time, new and old conditions, etc. The platform will give an estimate based on the filled information, and you can choose to send it. Or home collection.

"I usually choose a recycler to collect it at home, which can reduce the possible damage in the delivery process. In addition, I will ask the recycler to restore the phone to the factory settings on the spot and delete personal information."

However, Zhou Fei feels that the lack of supervision of the entire recycling process is a big problem.

Generally, the recyclers inspect the quality of the mobile phone on site to determine the value of the mobile phone.

"I think this judgment is too subjective. For example, there is a small scratch on the mobile phone, which does not affect normal use at all, and 100 yuan will be deducted because of it. I think the value of the mobile phone is unilaterally determined by the recycling staff. This is not reasonable".

According to the survey, in addition to worrying about privacy leakage, 55.8% of the respondents said that they lack formal and reliable recycling channels, 46.7% of the respondents were worried that the recycling price was lower than expected, and 37.5% of the respondents said that the destination of the recycled mobile phones is unknown. Worried about damaging the environment.

In the survey, 74.4% of respondents expect to establish a safe and reliable recycling platform.

Li Wei said that most mobile phone recycling is now carried out by merchants. It is a commercial activity. All rules are determined by the merchants. Whether it is safe or not depends on the conscience of the merchants.

It is necessary to establish a truly safe and reliable recycling platform.

Zhang Cheng also believes that the current mobile phone recycling process is too opaque. "After the mobile phone is recycled, it is not clear how it will be handled. No one knows whether it will be refurbished and put on the market or dismantled."

He believes that relevant departments need to supervise this behavior, and it is best to make timely public announcements from the source to the flow.

As an electronic product, mobile phones have many heavy metal components, which can cause huge damage to the ecological environment if they are not handled properly. Therefore, supervision is very necessary.

In the survey, 61.6% of the respondents hope to establish a complete mobile phone evaluation mechanism, 60.3% of the respondents expect to improve the technology of mobile phone data processing to ensure personal privacy and security, and 51.8% of the respondents expect to improve the recovery process and form a traceability Chain.
