A red howler monkey was born in Planète Sauvage in Loire-Atlantique -

Planète sauvage

It is a species very little presented in zoos, visible in only eight parks in Europe and 14 around the world.

So when a little red howler monkey points the tip of its nose, it's obviously an event.

This Wednesday, the Planète Sauvage animal park, in Loire-Atlantique, announced the birth of one of these small primates, which occurred on February 16 after the 140 days of gestation of Yerba, the mother.

“Good news for the conservation of this species (…), welcomes the Loire-Atlantique park.

In the natural environment, the red howler monkey is threatened by poaching as well as deforestation leading to the disappearance of its habitat, in particular following the dramatic fires in the Pantanal and the Amazon in 2020. It is placed on the IUCN red list.

(International Union for the Conservation of Nature).

A first name to find

For the moment, this little remains hung on his mother's belly to suckle, sleep, or observe around him.

"He will then start to move between his back and his stomach, throughout his first year," explains the park.

He will be weaned between his 18 and 24 months.

"

By then, the monkey will also have to find a name!

Three have been selected and are being voted on by the general public on Facebook: Shongo (heart), Inti (sun), and Puca (red).
