The former figure skater Katarina Witt feels reminded of GDR times through the corona resolutions of the federal government and states.

"The similarity is amazing, what can be achieved so collectively in the name 'for the good of the people', earlier in socialism and now in capitalism, in such a small circle," wrote the 55-year-old on her Facebook page.

"I don't like to say it at all, but a little devil on my shoulder whispers almost mischievously in my ear - 'Welcome back to the GDR'".

“Of course I don't want the GDR back.

But we have been living under the rule of law for 30 years and for a year now we have been told what to do and what not to do, ”said Witt on Wednesday of the German press agency.

"And those who tell us that can't get their own job done."

Witt emphasizes in her Facebook post: "The life-threatening virus is here and it is important to protect people!" In the meantime, however, there are "safe opening concepts that would allow social and economic life, albeit limited".

Federal Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU) and the country leaders advise on measures to contain the pandemic on a regular basis.

Some critics of the Corona protective measures are reminded of "lonely decisions" from GDR times.

Others counter that, unlike in the GDR, there are no restrictions on freedom of expression.

All of Germany, according to Witt, now feels “a touch” of what it is like to be “determined, directed and influenced by a handful of members of the government”.

Perhaps this experience could also lead to "that we former GDR citizens no longer have to explain and defend ourselves".

Born in Berlin, a superstar on the ice during the GDR era and after the fall of the Wall, had already criticized the political measures against the corona pandemic in February.

At the same time, she had emphasized that she was not a “corona denier” or “lockdown opponent”.

Saxony's Prime Minister Michael Kretschmer (CDU) met with her for an exchange.
