In view of the sharp rise in the number of corona infections, a large majority of Germans want to stay at home during the Easter holidays.

In a survey carried out by the YouGov opinion research institute on behalf of the German Press Agency, 79 percent of those surveyed said they did not want to travel.

Only 2 percent want to go on vacation abroad, another 4 percent want to travel in Germany.

At the time of the survey (March 16-18), 10 percent had not yet made a decision.

The Easter holidays begin next week in most of the federal states.

So far, it is still completely unclear what holiday options will be available in Germany at all.

Chancellor Angela Merkel wanted to discuss this with the Prime Ministers of the federal states on Monday afternoon.

Hotels, guest houses and holiday homes are still closed to tourists.

The federal and state governments are currently generally advising against tourist travel.

Abroad, around 160 of the total of around 200 countries are on the Robert Koch Institute's risk list.

Anyone who goes on vacation in these countries must be quarantined when they return.

However, individual holiday areas in other European countries have recently ceased to be a risk area due to the lower number of infections.

These include all the islands of the Spanish Balearic Islands, parts of mainland Spain, Portugal and the popular Croatian holiday peninsula of Istria.

The lifting of the travel warning for Mallorca triggered a booking boom a week ago.
