Britta:

In our society people talk about sugar making you sick.

Is this statement true?

And if so, to what extent did sugar make us sick or is it unhealthy?

Dr.

Andreas Pfeiffer:

Sugar doesn't make you sick, that's wrong.

But sugar has certain properties that are unfavorable and that explain some of these effects.

To do this, you need to know that sugar is a double molecule made up of glucose and fructose.

This is split at the top of the intestine and absorbed very quickly.

As soon as you consume it in excess or in constant small portions, it becomes harmful.

Basically by overloading the metabolism with energy.

If you eat the amount of sugar you burn, nothing really happens.

Sugar is not toxic per se in any way, it is the excess of sugar and the constant small portions caused by snacking.
