It has never been so easy: news and entertainment, anytime and to take away.

Podcasts are trendy.

You can hear them on the way to work, on a long train journey or in the comfort of your own home on the sofa.

But what exactly are podcasts?

You will find an overview of the most important questions and answers here.

What is a podcast?

Podcasts are audio and video contributions that can be played immediately over the Internet - or downloaded for later.

With the help of smartphones or mp3 players you can take them with you wherever you go.

You can access a podcast at any time.

So there are no fixed broadcast times at which to tune in.

The only must: a device with internet access.

All you need is a smartphone or a computer, or alternatively internet-enabled televisions and boxes.

Some podcasts last a few minutes, others several hours.

What does “podcast” actually mean?

“Podcast” is an artificial word made up of two parts: “Pod” comes from “i

Pod

”, Apple's mobile player for music and videos.

"Cast" stands for "Broad

cast

", which means "broadcast" or "transmission".

Where can I find podcasts?

Where can i hear them?

There are several ways to play a podcast.

The easiest way is via the smartphone.

With the help of apps such as Spotify, Apple Podcasts or Deezer, you can use the search function to find targeted podcasts.

The podcast app of the respective operating system is already preinstalled on Android and Apple devices.

All of the apps mentioned can also be used on the computer.

WELT and other daily newspapers put their podcasts on their websites.

There they can be played comfortably.

The podcasts from broadcasters can be found in their media libraries, those from private providers on their websites.

Many podcast producers also upload their formats to YouTube.

Do i need an app?

You don't necessarily need an app to listen to podcasts.

Because many podcasts are available free of charge on the websites of their producers.

An app has the advantage of being easy to use.

It is also useful to bundle access to many different podcasts in a single app.

How can I subscribe to a podcast?

display

In order not to miss an episode of your favorite podcast, it is worth subscribing.

With Spotify you select the podcast and click on "Follow", with Apple Podcasts on "Subscribe".

As soon as a new episode appears, it will be displayed in the app.

If you also want to be notified of a new episode “in real time”, you can use the RSS feed: With two clicks you can subscribe to many podcasts.

Do the formats cost anything?

Most podcasts are free.

Some providers place advertisements, podcasts under public law are financed through broadcasting fees.

Exclusive podcasts cost money on platforms like Audible or Podimo.

You can either buy the relevant podcast for a one-time fee or get access through a time-limited subscription.

Podcast recommendations

Is there a topic that interests you a lot?

The likelihood that there will be a podcast about it is high - Spotify alone offers over two million podcasts.

A Forsa survey from the previous year identified the most popular podcast topics among Germans.

“News, Economy and Politics” came first, followed by “Science and Health”.

In third place are “entertainment and comedy”.

Platforms such as Spotify and Apple Podcast sort their podcasts according to topic and popularity - this provides a good overview.

If you want it to be very uncomplicated, search Google.

A large selection can be conveniently browsed, downloaded and played using its podcast function.
