While almost all sectors of activity have been severely affected by the Covid-19 epidemic, those linked to digital have been successful. Online gambling is part of this category: their figure is high. business grew 22% in 2020 compared to last year.

According to data from the national gaming authority reported by RMC, it now stands at 1.7 billion euros.

4.4 million sports bettors

Among the various areas of the sector, betting on sports competitions remains the dominant activity.

With an increase of 7% compared to 2019, stakes reached 5.3 billion euros, the highest amount ever recorded since the opening to competition in 2010. More and more punters athletes are 4.4 million today.

Online gamers are 89% male, under 35 in 72% of cases and 18-24 in 30% of cases.

They often favor bets on popular sports such as football, tennis or basketball.

A risk of addiction

If the news seems good for professionals in the sector, the National Gaming Authority (ANJ) still wishes to warn.

Because the youngest are now targeted by flashy ads on social networks, like Snapchat or TikTok.

The ANJ encourages people to remain vigilant, in particular because of the risk of addiction.

"The massive arrival of new players means protecting minors more, especially in the run-up to the Olympic Games and Euro football," adds the regulatory authority.
