  • The 5G study mission has just completed its work in Rennes.

  • It will unveil its proposals for supervising the deployment of the technology on March 29 during the city council.

  • With the end of the study mission, operators can now deploy 5G in the Breton capital.

5G has already been available in several French cities since the end of November.

Not yet in Rennes but it will not be long.

The operators had indeed undertaken to wait for the study mission set up by the city this fall to deliver its conclusions before marketing their first packages.

This is now done with a report that will be presented to city council on March 29.

In this 108-page document, the 20 elected officials and 20 citizens who made up the mission do not oppose the deployment of technology.

Moreover, they cannot do it just like the mayor, the deployment falling under the competence of the State.

For four months, they instead sought to study the health and environmental impacts of 5G, a technology that promises tenfold internet speed but which is the subject of debate in society.

More transparency from operators

From this work 54 proposals emerge which will be debated in the municipal council before being included in a charter on mobile telephony which will be submitted to the operators.

"We know that the city's room for maneuver is limited in this area, but nevertheless they exist and there are things that can be done in the region", underlines Pierre Jannin, the elected representative in charge of digital technology who led the working group.

Among the proposals put forward, the study mission calls in particular for operators to be more transparent about 5G and digital technology, in particular by making their information on exposure to waves accessible.

It also invites them to "pool their facilities", "prioritize the deployment of 5G with regard to the real need, in areas where the 4G network is already saturated" and to "create and preserve white areas in the territory".

Develop free wifi in public spaces

Some participants in the study mission also fear that 5G will further aggravate the digital divide because not everyone will have the means to subscribe to a package.

They therefore propose to “promote access to free wifi in highly targeted public spaces”.

Finally, the mission calls on operators to take action to educate and raise their customers' awareness of digital sobriety, some even mentioning the idea of restricting packages.

Not sure, however, that this proposal packs Orange, Free and others.
