  • On several occasions in recent months, loggers have cut timber belonging to owners in Ariège without their authorization.

  • An illegal practice denounced by several of them who decided to file a complaint, just like one of the municipalities concerned.

  • A Spanish company would be at the origin of these misdeeds, the public prosecutor of Foix indicates for his part to take the case very seriously.

“They ransacked a hectare of forest, 300 fir trees planted 48 years ago.

It was a little paradise with a soul where I have a lot of memories ”.

Christophe Ségato is still in shock at what happened to his little piece of paradise, in Perles-et-Castelet, a small town in the Pyrenees, located on the road to Andorra.

Two weeks ago, the town hall called him to tell him that loggers had ransacked the forest that surrounds his family house, an old sheepfold bought by his parents in 1989. And left with the illegally cut wood.

A precious place for all the work accomplished during these years, to maintain the trees over 30 meters high where deer and birds came to find refuge.

"A real ecological disaster, we even found on site broken hydraulic hoses and traces of oil pollution", still plague this inhabitant of Haute-Garonne.

And he is not the only victim of these loggers who enter private property and remove the most beautiful trees before leaving, leaving the land in a sorry state.

Twelve complaints filed

In total, twelve complaints were filed, including one by the town hall.

“Apparently, they have been committing this kind of misdeeds for five years in Ariège and Aude.

They went to other locals and started cutting.

But the owners were there and intervened.

They came back to look for the wood cut during the night.

These are rogue methods ”, does not take offense Christophe Ségato who has decided to ally with the other injured inhabitants and to set up an association.

These loggers are said to be employed by a Spanish company, which also has legal contracts in the sector.

Some of them would have explained to some aggrieved owners that it would be a mistake and they would have offered compensation.

“The damage is considerable, for us the value of wood is not pecuniary, it is above all an emotional loss.

We do not want there to be other victims, these people in addition are harming the industry, ”continues the owner who hopes that there will be legal proceedings.

Laurent Dumaine, the public prosecutor of Foix, told France Bleu Occitanie that he was taking the case very seriously and said he was attentive to this kind of damage to the environment.
