The departmental council of the Seine-Maritime Order of Physicians sentenced a general practitioner to a three-year ban on practicing his profession on Friday March 12.

The caregiver had refused to vaccinate an 11-month-old girl under the pretext of a family contraindication, reports

It was in February 2019 that a pediatrician from the University Hospital of Rouen alerted the Order of Physicians as well as the unit for collecting worrying information (Crip).

After examining the little girl, he realized by consulting her health record that she had not received any of the compulsory vaccines in France.

A precautionary principle taken to the extreme

When the child was admitted to the pediatric emergency room, the parents presented a medical certificate of general contraindication to vaccinations, issued by the general practitioner.

The latter had justified his choice by "possible accidents (in case of vaccination) and not referenced, which I refuse to take responsibility".

"This child is free from contagious disease and fit for community life", concluded the medical certificate.

It was because of two family histories that the caregiver refused to vaccinate the child.

In front of his peers, however, he recognized that this possible contraindication should have applied only to the hepatitis B vaccine.

Finally, the disciplinary chamber of the Order decided to sanction this doctor, who no longer practices for health reasons.

The institution considered that he had committed "several faulty breaches consisting of an attitude of non-compliance with vaccine obligations".

The sanction pronounced will take effect on June 14, 2021.
