Recently, several merganser ducks splashed for food in the waters of Lushan County, Ya'an City, Sichuan Province.

Relevant experts have identified that among the 8 mergansers photographed, 2 of them are Chinese goosanders (females).

It is reported that the Chinese Merganser is a species that survived the Tertiary Glacial Period. It is a national first-class protected animal. There are only less than 3,000 in the world. This is the first time the Chinese Merganser has appeared in the waters of Lushan City.

Experts believe that the mixed colony of Chinese Merganser and Common Merganser in the waters of Lushan County is a normal overwintering phenomenon and also a good performance of the ecological environment of the Lushan waters.

The two mergansers mix together because they are the same species and have similar living habits. Mixing can not only enhance the ability to avoid natural enemies during migration, but also increase the chance of individual survival.
