The more contagious and probably more dangerous Corona variant B.1.1.7 is increasingly displacing other forms of the virus in Germany.

Their share is now 72 percent, according to a report by the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) on Wednesday.

So it is now found in about three out of four samples.

The spread of variant B.1.351 (first detection in South Africa), on the other hand, is slightly declining, while variant P.1 (first detection in Brazil) is still only detected sporadically in Germany.

Last week, the RKI had spoken of around 55 percent of the B.1.1.7 share.

At the beginning of the RKI survey around a month and a half ago, the proportion of mutants was still six percent.

The rapid increase was feared after the experience of other countries.

Due to the now high proportion of B.1.1.7, an exponential increase in the number of corona cases in Germany can be expected, according to the RKI report.

The share of 72 percent relates to retests of several laboratory groups for key mutations of the variant.

Among other things, because not all laboratories testing for Sars-CoV-2 participate and only a subset of the positive samples are examined, the value cannot be safely generalized, the RKI restricts.

The report is also based on other data sources: If, for example, one looks at complete genetic analyzes, which are carried out less often but are considered clear evidence, B.1.1.7 accounts for around 48 percent of the samples examined.
