  • The old national identity card, dating from 1995, will gradually be replaced by a much more secure document.

  • The new CNI, in credit card format, includes an electronic chip containing the photo and two fingerprints of the holder.

  • According to Marlène Schiappa, this secure title should make it possible to further fight against identity theft.

After 26 years of service, the identity card that we all know today will be gradually replaced by a smaller and above all much more secure model.

This reputedly tamper-proof title is made in the ultra-sensitive workshops of the Imprimerie Nationale, in Flers-en-Escrebieux, near Douai, in the North.

For its launch, scheduled in a few days, the Minister for Citizenship, Marlène Schiappa, had made the trip.

One thing is certain, you do not enter the IN Groupe site like a mill.

In short, logical, since it is in these facilities, classified as highly sensitive, that all the secure documents in force in France but also in 130 countries around the world are manufactured: passports, driving licenses, registration certificates and national cards. 'identity.

On the Flers site alone, more than 25 million secure tickets are produced each year.

Robust, practical and "tamper-proof"

The identity card currently in force in France was therefore launched in 1995. At the time, this plastic title was a clear evolution compared to its cardboard ancestor.

Except that the counterfeiters got the better of the security put in place and the bar had to be raised.

Since Tuesday, it's done.

The new CNI is initially smaller, in credit card format like the new driver's licenses.

IN Groupe also ensures robustness capable of withstanding “for a use of 10 years without affecting the legibility of the title”.

There is also an option to indicate two addresses on the back of the card for children in alternate residence.

On the security side, the manufacturer has put the package.

The CNI now carries an electronic chip containing all the information entered on the title but also “the holder's photograph and two of his fingerprints”.

The Minister for Citizenship specifies that these data are only accessible to law enforcement and public services.

Affixed to the front of the CNI, the holder's photo is also printed using the “multiple laser image” technique and includes a holographic device.

These safeguards make it possible to verify that the photo has not been modified.

In short, according to IN Group, the falsification of this title is impossible.

Marlène Schiappa particularly insisted on the phenomenon of identity theft to extol the merits of this new secure title.

According to the Minister Delegate, more than 33,000 people on average per year are victims of fraudulent use of their identity.

Still according to Marlène Schiappa, it is for the crooks to contract consumer loans, to buy expensive objects or to claim social rights.

If indeed the new securities theoretically prevent any suggestion of falsification, there remains the option of using a stolen card without modifying it.

"When you have your card stolen, you have to report it quickly, it is an act of citizenship", explains the Minister.

Of course, this will not prevent the thief from using it, but it will facilitate the victim's efforts to have their rights recognized.
