China News Service, Hong Kong, March 15. Du Qihua, a graduate of the University of Hong Kong, was sentenced to five and a half years in prison at the West Kowloon Magistracy on the 15th for assaulting a police officer and biting the finger of a sergeant during the "regulation turmoil" of the previous year.

Du Qihua, 24, was charged on July 14, 2019 for disrupting public order, assaulting Constable Yip Cheuk-hsuan, inflicting serious damage to the body of then Senior Superintendent Leung Zijian, and intentionally injuring police officers in Phase I of the New Town Plaza in Sha Tin Long Liang Qiye, of which Liang Qiye's right ring finger was bitten off.

The judge believed that the defendant clearly had the intention of inciting others to disrupt social peace, attacking and insulting the police, so he was sentenced to 7 months' imprisonment for disrupting order in public places.

The judge pointed out that the two police officers who were attacked were performing their duties properly at the time of the incident. Before the incident, the two police officers had no physical contact or conflict with the defendant. The defendant only attacked because the other party was a police officer. The defendant was sentenced to two and a half months' imprisonment and 16 months for the crimes of assaulting the police and causing serious bodily harm to others.

As for the crime of intentional wounding, the judge believed that although the defendant bit while Liang Qiye's finger entered his mouth, instead of actively biting off, his behavior was very cruel and caused great harm to Liang Qiye, which was more serious than similar cases.

Therefore, the defendant was sentenced to 4 years and 5 months imprisonment for this crime.

Since the sentence needs to take into account the punishment of the offender, the deterrence of latecomers, the relief of the harm suffered by the victim and family members, and the need for the defendant to renew and reform, the court finally sentenced him to five and a half years' imprisonment.
