France has recorded a 14% excess mortality since January compared to 2020 -

Between January 1 and March 1, 2021, France recorded an increase in the number of deaths from all causes, 14% higher than that recorded over the same period in 2020. INSEE, which reports this finding, specifies that the proportion has remained stable since the start of the year.

During the first two months of the year, 123,925 people died in France, or 14% more compared to 2020 and 5% compared to 2019, year when the winter flu was more virulent, indicates Friday the institute statistic in its weekly death toll during the Covid-19 epidemic.

A slight drop in February

In January, some 2,140 deaths were recorded every day on average.

In February, the average number of daily deaths "fell slightly" to around 2,000, according to still provisional data.

Compared to the two previous years, the number of deaths recorded in January and February 2021 is higher in almost all regions of mainland France, underlines INSEE, with a larger increase in Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, Bourgogne-Franche -Comté and Grand-Est.

54,700 more deaths in 2020 than in 2019

To follow the evolution of mortality, INSEE has now chosen to favor the comparison with the year 2019, a year without a Covid epidemic which started in March 2020. Thus, compared to 2019, the number of deaths does not occur. increases only for people over 65.

As in March-April 2020 or in autumn 2020, deaths occurring in retirement homes have increased more than those occurring in hospital: + 18% between January 1 and March 1, 2021 compared to 2019 and + 5% for hospital deaths.

Deaths occurring at home are also on the rise, + 12%.

Over the whole of 2020, France recorded 54,700 more deaths than in 2019, i.e. an excess mortality of 9%.

According to the latest official figures, the coronavirus epidemic has killed nearly 90,000 people in France.
