In the UK, an elite police officer has been arrested on suspicion of murder.

The official, who belongs to a unit to protect parliamentarians and diplomats, has been in custody since Tuesday evening, the London police said on Wednesday.

Also on Tuesday, a woman was arrested in the course of the same investigation.

The investigation is about the disappearance of 33-year-old Sarah E. in London.

The woman had left a friend's apartment on the evening of March 3rd and never got home.

The police have been asking the public for information on the case for days.

Officials raided buildings in London and Kent and a wooded area near Ashford on Wednesday.

In the evening, the Metropolitan Police reported the discovery of body parts in the forest.

"Unfortunately human remains have apparently been found," said Commissioner Cressida Dick in a TV statement.

The identity of the dead person cannot yet be confirmed and it could take a “considerable time” for clarity to prevail.

Dick said the detective's arrest caused "shock and anger" among the public and police.

"I speak for all my colleagues when I say that we are appalled by this terrible, terrible news." It is the task of the police to "control the streets and protect people".

Previously, London's Mayor Sadiq Khan had already shown understanding when people are "shocked and concerned" by the developments.

He welcomed that the official's case had been passed on to a supervisory body which is now to conduct an independent investigation.
