Jordan: 6 months imprisonment and a fine of 1,000 dinars for two newlyweds

Today, a Jordanian court imposed a 6-month prison sentence and a fine of one thousand dinars (about one thousand and three hundred dollars) against two brides, one of whom is of Arab nationality, who violated defense orders to hold their brides in the presence of more than 20 people.

The court, which held its sessions remotely, also issued a prison sentence for the father of one of the grooms for 3 months.

The Public Prosecutor of Irbid (in the north of the kingdom) arrested the newlyweds at the Irbid Correction and Rehabilitation Center for a week, for violating defense orders.

Defense Order No. (16) issued for the year 2020 prohibits the holding of wedding parties, social invitations and gatherings of all kinds for more than 20 people.

The order stipulates that anyone who holds a gathering in violation of the law shall be punished with imprisonment from three months to a year, or with a fine of not less than 1000 dinars and not more than 3000 dinars, or with both punishments together.
