Thuringia's Prime Minister Bodo Ramelow (left) supports the shopping experiments planned in Erfurt and Weimar, among others.

In the cities, the system could be tried out with test centers and digital contact tracking, said Ramelow on Thursday of the German press agency on the sidelines of the state parliament meeting in Erfurt.

"If the system is up and running, we might be ready to take a bigger step in two or three weeks."

The new Thuringian Corona Ordinance, which is due to come into force on March 14, provides for a kind of experimentation clause with the possibility of regional opening steps under precisely defined conditions.

The clause, the draft of which is available to the dpa, speaks of model projects that allow deviations from state-wide regulations.

They require the approval of the Ministry of Health and are only admissible if “the seven-day incidence value of 100 infections per 100,000 inhabitants is below” when they start.

“I want to open the door,” Ramelow continued.

Testing and digital contact tracking are the most important criteria that have to be met.

He is also in contact with the Nordhausen district, which is also planning to relax.

According to Mayor Andreas Bausewein (SPD), Erfurt wants to enable city center shopping with tests for two days and only for residents of the city.

A date has not yet been definitely fixed, said a city spokeswoman on request.

“It will be the weekend of March 19th and 20th at the earliest.” Weimar's Mayor Peter Kleine is planning openings in retail outlets from March 15th.
