The few who have bought or inherited their own holiday home by the sea or on the edge of the Alps before Corona are lucky.

Or who can share grandpa's little dacha with a lot of asbestos, but with a clear view of a lake, together with the extensive family, without quarrels and complicated weekly plans.

Unlucky are those who want to rent a house or apartment for a week or two this summer.

If you are looking for holiday accommodation in the most popular regions, such as the Baltic Sea and North Sea, your eyes will water.

Many holidaymakers in Corona times like this self-sufficient form of accommodation - if you take it exactly: too many.

Because if you want to book for the summer of 2021 now, you will find that almost everything is booked out right by the water in this country, and even if something is still available, the prices are often astronomical.

Vacation homes are in high demand due to Corona

That was foreseeable.

Already in Corona summer 2020, bookings for almost half of all providers in this country were even significantly better than before Corona, with an average increase of 15 percent.

This was the result of a survey by the holiday home association.

Unlike many other companies in the tourism industry, the holiday home sector is getting through the Corona crisis comparatively well.

Because in times when travel is possible, holiday homes are more in demand than ever.

The reason for this is that many travelers prefer to stay to themselves, want to cook for themselves and keep their distance from others.

Overall, vacationers from Germany plan to travel by car (71 percent) in 2021.

When asked which type of accommodation would be most likely to be booked, 63 percent opted for a holiday home or holiday apartment and only 31 percent for a hotel.

This was the result of evaluations by the search engine for vacation rentals, HomeToGo.de.

Supply is becoming scarce in some regions

The supply is already scarce in popular regions: This is the result of an analysis of previous booking data by DS Destination Solutions.

The HRS Group company specializes in the marketing of holiday apartments and houses.

In August, only 32 percent of the accommodations can be booked on the North Sea islands.

On the Baltic islands it is 48 percent.

The Germans seem to be drawn towards the mountains to a similar extent.

In the Bavarian Alps, for example, only 50 percent is available.

In the Zugspitz region it is 51 percent and around the Chiemsee around 55 percent.

The brands DanCenter, Traum-Ferienwohnungen and TUI-Ferienhaus can clearly confirm this booking trend.

At TUI-Ferienhaus, the share of bookings by German guests for the summer months is 50 percent.

The DanCenter holiday homes in Northern Germany are already 63 percent booked in July and 64 percent in August.

And dream holiday homes are currently recording more demand than supply for the months of July and August.

Where there is still cheap accommodation

The result: prices are rising noticeably, especially with private landlords.

An exclusive price evaluation by HomeToGo.de for July 2021 showed near the sea: The most expensive are vacation rentals on Sylt at 166 euros per day, on the Bay of Lübeck (160 euros) and on the Holstein Baltic Sea coast (149 euros).

In principle, hardly anything less than 137 euros per day is feasible for the entire Baltic Sea, and hardly anything less than 117 euros for the North Sea.

On the East Frisian Islands, the price in August is 145 euros per day and accommodation.

But there are still “insider tips” if you can do without being close to the sea and the Alps: DS Destination Solutions sees a lot of choice in the middle of the country for holidaymakers looking for suitable accommodation.

Saxon Switzerland, for example, still has 84 percent ready, the Rhön even 89 percent.

It currently looks just as relaxed in the Odenwald and the Harz Mountains.

HomeToGo has also found five regions in which accommodations are cheap and still relatively low in demand, apart from the main regions on the coasts, which are in high demand, but still in nature.

In the Uckermark (91 euros), in the Spreewald (90 euros), accommodations in the Lüneburg Heath (83 euros), in the Bavarian Forest (82 euros) and in the Moselle wine region near Koblenz for 79 euros.

Bookings with free cancellation are particularly in demand, and most major providers offer them.

Some search engines, such as HomeToGo, have a filter option that only displays offers that can be canceled free of charge.

At Fewo-Direkt.de credits or refunds are common.

It is safer to clarify the cancellation conditions in writing with the landlord in advance.

Tourism goes away empty-handed - no opening perspectives for hotels

After the federal-state summit, there are still no prospects for tourism.

Hotel operators also want predictability, but they don't get it.

Diedersdorf Castle in Brandenburg is also affected.
