"Land of nomads" (Nomadland)

Fern (Frances McDormand) has lost both her miner husband and teaching job.

In search of work, she equips her dwelling in a van and becomes a modern nomad.

Rogerebert.com author Brian Tallerico notes that director Chloe Zhao does not try to make viewers feel sorry for Fern, but he also does not diminish her loneliness and sorrow.

The critic praises the work of the leading role: according to him, in this film, McDormand's performance is especially insightful and sophisticated.

"The Land of the Nomads" is based on the book of the same name by Jessica Bruder.

The film received the main prize of the Venice Film Festival and two Golden Globes - as the best film and for the best director.

Supernova

Supernova director and screenwriter Harry McQueen began researching the phenomenon of dementia at an early stage, when people around him were confronted with this disease.

The director communicated with patients and their relatives, collaborated with specialized organizations.

McQueen set out to show what happens in a person's life if it declines.

In the story, musician Sam (Colin Firth) and writer Tasker (Stanley Tucci), suffering from dementia, travel across England.

Joyful meetings with loved ones are overshadowed by the fact that Tasker's disease is progressing, and he loses his memory.

When Sam realizes that his friend is going to commit suicide, he tries to fill the last days of Tasker with vivid impressions and positive emotions.

The film is on the long list of the upcoming BAFTA Awards.

Stanley Tucci is eligible for the supporting role award.

Interestingly, Tucci and Firth have been friends in real life for many years.

"The nose, or the Conspiracy" not like that "

In his new cartoon, Andrei Khrzhanovsky combined Nikolai Gogol's story "The Nose" and the opera of the same name by Dmitry Shostakovich.

Khrzhanovsky had been planning to shoot the cartoon for 40 years, and he received permission to transfer the opera to the screen personally from Shostakovich.

The composer also became one of the protagonists of the tape along with the artist Pavel Filonov and the director Vsevolod Meyerhold.

In an interview with Filmpro, Khrzhanovsky noted that Gogol's works were initially suitable for film adaptation.

“If you read, say, the beginning of his“ Nevsky Prospekt ”and his other works, you will understand that this is a storyboard for an animation script,” he said.

The premiere of the tape took place in January 2020 at the Rotterdam festival.

Also, the picture was shown at a review in Annecy and at the Russian "Kinotavr".

"Palmyra"

In the center of the plot of the film by Ivan Bolotnikov ("Kharms") is a family tragedy against the backdrop of the war on terrorism.

The main character Arthur is a resident of one of the mountain villages of Dagestan.

He is informed that his daughter Maryam, who studied in Moscow, left the institute and fled to Syria: the girl was recruited by terrorists.

Arthur is going to save his daughter by opposing religious fanaticism with love.

“In the film, we talk about the values of human life.

Our hero rushes to save his family, goes to Syria.

This is by no means a military operation, no international coalitions - there is nothing behind it.

It's just the fate of a family in these dire circumstances, ”the ProfiCinema portal quotes producer Andrei Sigle.

Sigle also said that while working on a tape based on a fictional story, filmmakers learned a lot about similar situations from real life.

Despite the name, the plot of the tape has nothing to do with a specific Syrian city - filmmakers operate with collective images.

"Traffic" (Crisis)

The original title of the film by Nicholas Jarecki (Vicious Passion) refers to the opioid crisis and the US health crisis at the same time.

The situation in the States is shown through the stories of three people.

An agent of the Drug Enforcement Administration infiltrates a gang to catch big criminals, and at the same time to avenge his sister.

The scientist dares to talk about the side effects of the new pain reliever, which is supposedly non-addictive, in defiance of an influential supplier.

The mother independently undertakes to investigate the death of her son, who, according to the official version, died of a drug overdose.

The viewer rating of the film on the Rotten Tomatoes portal was 76%, but professional critics are not so supportive: so far, the tape has only 42% "freshness".

Screenrant author Mei Abdulbaki warns that there are too many details in the film, behind which the main meaning is lost.

According to the critic, "Traffic" lacks tension, drama and risk - and in general, the narrative is superficial.

However, the picture can attract the viewer with an all-star cast.

The film stars Evangeline Lilly, Armie Hammer, Gary Oldman, Michelle Rodriguez and other celebrities.

"Former"

Yevgeny Puzyrevsky's debut full-length film is centered around a young couple.

The main character Sasha and his fiancée Katya are pursued by Sasha's ex.

At first, she writes to her lover on social networks, but later finds him in the real world.

When it turns out that the stalker recently committed suicide, the situation becomes even more unpleasant.

“This picture is that all our actions leave a mark in life, sometimes not at all what we imagine or we would like, and that our past always haunts us,” said one of the producers of the tape, Vladislav Severtsev.

Together with his co-star Dmitry Litvinov, he previously worked on the horror film The Bride.

The roles in "Former" were performed by Vera Panfilova (Kincheva), Konstantin Beloshapka, Sergey Dvoinikov, Ekaterina Shumakova and others.

Panfilova admitted that she agreed to participate in the project in order to cope with her own fears.

“It was interesting for me to work in this genre, to try myself, because I absolutely don’t watch horror - I can’t, very receptive ... In general, I went into this genre in order to get to know it from the inside,” said the artist.
