The Yellow River flows through Shapotou District, Zhongwei City, Ningxia (taken on March 3, UAV photo).

In early spring, the Ningxia section of the Yellow River is clear and rippling with blue waves.

It is understood that every year at the end of winter and early spring, the amount of precipitation decreases, and the amount of water in the upper reaches of the Yellow River drops sharply. After the reservoirs along the line, the river becomes clear, and the Yellow River will show a translucent green when passing through Ningxia.

In the summer flood season, the Yellow River flows through the Loess Plateau, and rainwater carries a large amount of loess and sediment into the Yellow River, and the river water turns yellow.

The whole area of Ningxia belongs to the Yellow River Basin. The Yellow River runs 397 kilometers across the region from south to north, forming many lakes and wetlands along the way.

In recent years, Ningxia has implemented an ecological zone strategy and unremitting ecological construction has promoted the transition from "yellow" to "green" in Ningxia. At present, more than 500,000 mu of lakes and wetlands have been restored in the region, and the protected area of wetlands has reached 3.1 million mu. The 11.4% in 2010 increased to 15.2% in 2019.
