In Italy, the coronavirus pandemic is depressing average life expectancy.
The statistics authority ISTAT announced that people born last year were predicted to have an average age of 82.3 years.
In 2019, when the virus had not yet spread in Italy, the life expectancy of newborns was 83.2 years.
In the north particularly affected by the epidemic, the trend is more pronounced than in the rest of the country.
The pandemic has completely wiped out the increase in life expectancy over the past ten years in northern Italy, ISTAT said.
