The Academy of Medicine is positioning itself on the vaccination of caregivers, which "must become mandatory" to fight against Covid-19, she wrote in a press release published on Tuesday.

In the current epidemiological situation, "mass vaccination represents the main lever of action against Covid-19", she notes.

In this context, “the systematic vaccination of health professionals, which has become a priority, cannot be considered optional”.

"The population of caregivers is at the origin of 34% of grouped cases of nosocomial infections [contracted in a health establishment] with SARS-CoV-2", the virus responsible for Covid-19, notes the Academy, citing a figure from Public Health France.

"Insufficient" vaccination rates

However, the vaccine coverage rates against Covid-19 among doctors, nurses, nursing assistants and professionals working in Ehpad (Accommodation establishment for dependent elderly people) "remain notoriously insufficient, comparable to those noted against influenza ".

Considering that "vaccine hesitation is ethically unacceptable among caregivers", the Academy "recommends making vaccination against Covid-19 compulsory for all health professionals working in the public or liberal sector, in health establishments and in nursing homes, as well as for carers for the elderly.
