"There are some people in Hong Kong who blindly praise the West. British and American flags appeared during the period of'Occupy Central' and the'Amendment Disturbance.' Even the British and Americans found it inexplicable. This is a complicated and serious problem. If they had a basic understanding of Chinese history and culture, they would not do such a stupid thing."

Hong Kong CPPCC member and academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences Chen Xinzi accepted an exclusive interview with a reporter from China News Agency in Beijing on the 9th. He expressed his views on reforming Hong Kong's education, enhancing cultural identity, and encouraging young people to integrate into the overall development of the country.

He also emphasized that the central government’s efforts to improve Hong Kong’s electoral system are “just and righteous”; to prevent some people from messing up Hong Kong, the people can lead a peaceful and beautiful life.

At first I felt heartache, then I was very angry

Engaged in education for more than 30 years, Chen Xinzi has his own perseverance.

In November 2014, at the graduation ceremony of Hong Kong Baptist University, some students took the stage with a "yellow umbrella" with strong political meaning. The then principal Chen Xinzi once announced the suspension of the ceremony and asked individual students to "respect themselves."

"It's a pity to feel very heartbroken," Chen Xinzi said. They have received a good education, but they bring political elements to the solemn graduation ceremony stage. They shouldn't.

During the "Regulations Amendment Disturbance", some young Hong Kong students "lost on the streets" and even participated in illegal activities.

"There must be someone who used the passion of some students to confuse them to participate in violent actions such as beating and smashing, which made me very angry."

Chen Xinzi said bluntly, especially the violence towards people with different opinions, which shows that there is really a problem with education in Hong Kong.

The "dark violence" scene is still fresh in my memory. Chen Xinzi said that if the chaos continues, Hong Kong will collapse.

Last year, the central government promulgated the Hong Kong National Security Law, and this year it will improve the Hong Kong election system, all for the stability and future of Hong Kong society.

Reform Hong Kong education and enhance cultural identity

For some time, the issue of education reform has also triggered extensive discussions in Hong Kong.

Last month, the Hong Kong Education Bureau issued a circular letter to secondary schools, announcing the changes to the four core subjects of high schools and consulting the academic community. The general subjects include "Hong Kong under'One Country, Two Systems'", "Country Since Reform and Opening Up", and "Interconnected Dependence". Of the three major themes of the “contemporary world”, the first two of which involve education on national conditions.

"Education reform is very necessary and urgent." Chen Xinzi pointed out that before the return, Hong Kong's education was controlled by the British, and Hong Kong people's cultural identity of their own country was suppressed. After returning to the motherland for so many years, some young people did not understand themselves. Who is it?

In response to this deficiency, it is necessary to strengthen the youth's awareness of history and Chinese culture.

The inheritance of Chinese culture in Hong Kong has always been the focus of Chen Xinzi's heart.

In 2013, under his promotion, the first national college in Hong Kong, Jao Tsung-I College, was formally established.

Chen Xinzi said that Mr. Rao is a respected master of Chinese studies. We use him as a banner to establish a base for the promotion of Chinese studies. We hope that students will have more opportunities to learn Chinese traditional culture, enhance national pride, and enhance cultural identity.

"Of course, the work of inheriting Chinese culture and enhancing identity will not be accomplished overnight, and must be continued. But I always believe that a single spark can start a prairie fire," Chen Xinzi said.

Encourage youth exchanges and integrate into national development

This time when he went north to participate in the National Two Sessions, Chen Xinzi suggested in his proposal to increase efforts to encourage youth exchanges between the two places.

After his retirement from Hong Kong Baptist University, Chen Xinzi came to Guangzhou to teach.

He said that in fact, students in Hong Kong and the Mainland have worked very hard, earnestly learning knowledge, and will have a bright future.

However, some Hong Kong students do not know the country very well, or even have misunderstandings. We should create more opportunities for them to visit the mainland.

"Young people who have the opportunity to participate in the study and work in the Mainland are more likely to develop patriotic feelings. They can also achieve better personal achievements while participating in national construction."

The draft of the "14th Five-Year Plan" and the 2035 long-term goal outline has been submitted to the Fourth Session of the 13th National People's Congress for review.

Chen Xinzi said that the "14th Five-Year Plan" has given Hong Kong many new opportunities.

He has always paid close attention to the issue of Hong Kong's construction of an international innovation and technology center. He believes that with the strong support of the country, the prospects are promising.
