The United Nations World Tourism Organization announced that one third of the destinations in the world are currently completely closed to foreign tourists, especially in Asia and Europe.

The Madrid-based organization stated in a report that, with governments beginning to ease travel restrictions last year, "the emergence of new versions of the virus" and "the still serious epidemic situation" upset the balance.

Last February, 69 of the 217 destinations in the world, or 32%, were completely closed to foreign tourists, including 30 in Asia and the Pacific, 15 in Europe and 11 in Africa.

This percentage decreased, given the peak of border closures recorded in May 2020, when 75% of destinations worldwide were completely closed, but it is higher than the November rate, when only 27% of destinations were closed.

The World Tourism Organization indicated that there is a "more accurate evidence-based approach" related to travel measures, such as requiring travelers to present a test result confirming that they are not infected with the epidemic upon arrival.

About a third of global destinations (32%) now require a "PCR or antigen test" on arrival, often accompanied by quarantine.
