When robots can hold "half the sky", how far is the smart construction site from us?

Member Yang Guoqiang suggested speeding up the application of construction robots and promoting the digital transformation of the construction industry

A few years ago, when Qu Qiang and his team members walked into the construction site for the first time, they had a first-hand experience of the "dangerous, heavy and dirty" construction site.

He climbed onto the four-story scaffolding, stepped on the steel bars and turned over the wooden formwork, and saw a dozen workers busy with tools and concrete mud spots on their clothes.

As the person in charge of the concrete product line of Guangdong Bozhilin Robot Co., Ltd., Qu Qiang's main job is to lead the development of concrete construction robots.

The 5G era has arrived, but the construction industry is still one of the industries with the lowest degree of digitization and automation.

While other industries are stepping up to do "smart addition", the "big but not good" construction industry still stays at the level of "moving bricks, tying steel bars, pouring concrete, and installing formwork".

More and more young people are no longer willing to work on construction sites under the label of "migrant workers" like their parents did, but are more willing to choose emerging industries. The phenomenon of "sending express delivery rather than entering the construction site" is common.

According to the National Bureau of Statistics’ 2019 Migrant Workers Monitoring Survey Report, the average age of migrant workers in my country in 2019 was 40.8 years old, 0.6 years higher than in 2018; among them, migrant workers over 50 accounted for more than 24%.

Ding Lieyun, a representative of the National People's Congress and an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, said: "my country's construction industry has created many world firsts. At the same time, it is also facing problems such as poor product performance, huge waste of resources, outstanding safety problems, serious environmental pollution, and low production efficiency."

The construction industry has reached a time when it must change.

Digital and intelligent building construction methods have become an inevitable choice for the sustainable development of this traditional industry.

In Shunde, Guangdong, Qu Qiang and his colleagues moved the laboratory to the construction site. After rigorous testing, in September last year, Bo Zhilin's first batch of 43 construction robots officially "started", with construction robots as the core human-machine collaborative operation. The construction system was officially put into use on the front line.

When the "robot workers" in sci-fi movies become reality, can Gailou be fully automated and mechanized like a car?

According to Qu Qiang, these "robot workers" all have unique skills: some are responsible for indoor spraying, some are responsible for exterior wall spraying, some can clean floors, and some can carry and install indoor wall panels.

Take the floor tile paving robot as an example, its construction efficiency is twice that of manual labor, and the construction quality is better.

Qu Qiang envisioned that in the future construction sites, those hard work, tired work, dirty work, and dangerous work can be completely dumped to robots.

At that time, the construction site will save more than half of the manpower, and it will truly realize that the construction robot can top half the sky.

Public information shows that although significant progress has been made in the research and development and application of intelligent construction equipment for buildings, including Bozhilin Robots, it is still in its infancy and large-scale applications will take time.

However, digital transformation is an important way to promote the high-quality development of my country's construction industry, and it is also the general trend.

Yang Guoqiang, a member of the CPPCC National Committee and Chairman of the Board of Directors of Country Garden, who participated in the fourth session of the 13th CPPCC National Committee in Beijing, proposed to combine the building construction process with new generation information technologies such as the Internet of Things and big data, and use building robots, building information modeling (BIM), etc. Product technology realizes the intelligentization and informationization of the whole life cycle of construction projects, and improves the safety of the construction process and the economy and reliability of the building.

To this end, he suggested vigorously supporting the research and development and application of construction robots and intelligent construction equipment; speeding up the construction of an industrial Internet platform based on BIM digital technology; researching and establishing and improving the intelligent construction standard system and evaluation system.

Yang Guoqiang believes: "Robots are accumulating surging power, and the future development potential is unimaginable."

"Maybe soon, the house you bought was built by robots, and the decorator you called was also a robot." Qu Qiang said with confidence.
