At least 29,000 residents of German retirement and nursing homes suffering from Covid-19 have already died in the corona pandemic, according to a report in the "Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung" (FAZ).

This is the result of a survey among the health and social ministries of the federal states, the FAZ reported on Saturday.

The number could be even higher, however, because there may be gaps in the country's statistics.

In total, the Robert Koch Institute had registered 71,804 corona deaths by Saturday.

In the federal states in which the proportion of deaths in homes of all corona deceased were reported, the numbers were sometimes very high, according to the report.

They range from 25 percent in Saxony and 29 percent in Saxony-Anhalt to 35 percent in Lower Saxony, 39 percent in Baden-Württemberg and 40 percent in North Rhine-Westphalia to 47 percent in Saarland, 54 percent in Bavaria and 60 percent in Hamburg.

In January the values were particularly high.

During the month, the facilities reported the deaths of around 9,500 home residents who had contracted the corona virus.

In some cases, the figures also include those from shared accommodation for the homeless, asylum seekers and other homes, but the majority relates to old people's and nursing homes.
