You have to differentiate a little how close the friendships are.
Women are more likely to have face-to-face friendships, where they talk about all kinds of things.
In the case of men, one often speaks of side-to-side friendships.
They do something together, for example they play squash.
That doesn't mean they don't talk to each other.
A pandemic with its restrictions can affect a friendship more strongly than the friends who usually met to talk in restaurants and now exchange ideas over the phone.
